Sunday Sweets: Childhood Friends

I don't care how old you are, there's still something magical about a 3D character cake. It's like seeing one of your old childhood friends come to life, just so you can carve him up and eat him!

Wait. That came out wrong.

What I meant was, would you look at this adorable Wall-E?

I'm starting to wonder why these bakers don't start shellacking their cakes and selling them as big figurines. I'd totally keep this guy on my desk, right next to my stack of shellacked Twinkies. (Preserved for posterity!)

I've never actually watched Rugrats, but I love how this cake tells a story:

By CW reader Mike S.

If you look closely, you can see they're reading a dinosaur book called "REPTAR," which Google tells me is the green dino's name. Love it. Oh, and get this: not only is Mike S. a hobby baker, this is also his first-ever fondant cake, and only his third decorated cake EVER. Yeah. Take THAT, wreckerators!

Here's a classic all of us oldsters remember:

The original Snoop Dog!

And this Piglet cake looks dangerously huggable:

Dangerous for my clothing, that is. Do you know how hard it is to get fondant stains out of cotton?

I know this next character pretty well, considering I've never seen his movie:

Totoro!! For some reason I always thought he was from a cartoon show, but it turns out he's actually from the Japanese movie My Neighbor Totoro. How did I miss that? Now I have to go find this movie and watch it. (Oh, and if you want to see the most epic homemade Totoro costume ever, scroll about halfway down this post. So. Cool.)

I don't feature too many sheet cakes on Sunday Sweets, but this Toy Story one features some stellar skills:

As near as I can tell, the figures are made with a run-in, or floodwork, technique, and then accented with edible markers and airbrushing. That's a huge amount of work, and just beautifully done. The cake itself is mostly buttercream with fondant accents. See? Proof that you don't *have* to have towering sculpted cakes and pounds of fondant to make a gorgeous, tasty Sweet!

Of course, those things don't hurt, though:

This is Kai-Lan, from the show Ni Hao, Kai-Lan!, here to remind me that I am really out of the loop when it comes to cartoons these days. (I do love me some Phineas and Ferb, though.) Also, I'd really like my hair to look like that.

A-HA! I know this next one! It's Mater!

And WOW is he lookin' goooood! Check out the "rusty" chocolate and perfect lettering on his door. There's so much attention to detail here, even the cake board has cracks in the asphalt!

I know this guy, too, not to mention where he lives:

Bob the Sponge with Square Pants!! (Yeah, now I'm just messing with you.) I've seen a LOT of amazing Spongebob cakes in my day, but this is one of the best. It's just perfection.

And speaking of perfection, this final Sweet strikes just the right chord between childhood nostalgia, bright cheery colors, and drool-worthy yummaliciousness:

[swoon] Mr. Men and Little Miss!

I'm a huge fan of the way the baker used cookies for the figurines. They're a much tastier alternative to solid fondant or gumpaste, plus you could make them ahead of time. And that color scheme! With the chocolate brown and the sky-blue and the bright reds and yellows and greens and etc. etc.? SO AWESOME. If there isn't a nursery somewhere out there painted exactly like this cake, then we must pledge now, as a group, to go forth and correct that grave injustice. And then we'll have cake to celebrate.

Hope you guys are having a great weekend! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to watch more cartoons. (Did you know they have She-Rah on Netflix instant streaming now? Just sayin'.)

As always, please send your Sweet nominations (and yes, they can be your own cakes!) to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.
