Sunday Sweets for J.R.R. Tolkien's Birthday
Today is J.R.R. Tolkien's birthday, and I have JUST the cakes to celebrate.
Starting with the most adorable Hobbit hole this side of the Shire:
(By Cakey Goodness)
Complete with a little Gandalf coming to visit!
Or, for a more movie-accurate homage to The Hobbit:
(By Bubolinkata)
I'm digging the sepia-toned portraits and hand-painting.
Then there's The Hobbit's biggest star:
(By Tartas Imposibles)
BENEDICT CUMBER... er, I mean Smaug.
And seriously, LOOK at that sculpting! Incredible! Not to mention the genius design of having Smaug's head slithering out of the book pages.
Any LEGO fans out there? Because this Gandalf the Grey minifig looks positively smashing:
(By Sylwia Sobiegraj)
As fantastic as his beard is, I think it's the pegs on the cake board that really make the whole thing.
An incredibly detailed Minas Tirith:
(By Chocolate Shells 1)
The White City of Gondor in white chocolate, perhaps? Perfect for geeky weddings!
Although this Dark Tower definitely draws the eye:
(By Black Cherry Cake Company)
Eh? EH??
:D
When it comes to weddings, though, you can't beat this gorgeous Elvish design:
(Baker unknown. Anybody recocgnize it?)
I love the hanging Evenstar topper, and the Gondor sigils.
Or how about this subtle Lothlorien-inspired beauty?

I'll be honest, I got majorly distracted by the wedding photos for that cake, because LOOKIE:
Easily the most lavish themed wedding I've ever seen! Follow the link up there to see the rest.
And finally, since you can never have too many amazing dragon cakes:
(By Cakes Rock)
Who would ever guess that's cake?? And as stunning as the sculpting and airbrushing is, for some reason I can't stop staring at the perfect pile of gold coins. SO GOOD.
Happy Sunday, everyone!
